Sony says China business has recovered, foresees growth

BEIJING (Reuters) - Sony Corp's business in China has "more or less" returned to levels seen before recent protests against Japan's actions over a group of disputed islands, the Japanese company's China chief, Nobuki Kurita, told reporters on Tuesday.

Calls for boycotts of Japanese products broke out across China in September after Japan nationalized two of a group of disputed East China Sea islands, known as the Diaoyu in Chinese and the Senkaku in Japanese, by purchasing them from their private owners.

The spat plunged relations between Japan and China into a deep freeze and hit sales of Japanese goods in China. Kurita said, however, that Sony's China business would recover strongly in the coming three business years after a dip in the current one.

"My general impression is business conditions have more or less returned to the pre-crisis environment," he told a media briefing at a Sony store in eastern Beijing.

He saw sales in China falling 10 percent in the business year to next March from the previous year, but rebounding in the year to March 2013 and growing strongly in the two subsequent years.

Kurita declined to comment on what impact the election of the hawkish Shinzo Abe as Japan's new prime minister could have on Japan-China relations.

Abe has vowed not to back down on the island dispute, but still must balance that stance with the need for stable relations with China. Japanese media have reported that he will send a special envoy to China to mend ties.

"There's no market that has no risk," he said when asked about Japan-China relations.

"Our mandate is to maximize our business potential in any given situation."

Kurita said he expects Sony's business in emerging markets to grow about 40 percent from the current level to reach some 2.6 trillion yen ($31 billion) in the business year ending in March 2015. China would account for "a good chunk" of that growth, he said.

Mophie OutRide action cam case for iPhone 44S available for $150

We took a look at Mophie's OutRide ruggedized action-cam case back at IFA in August, but the month of December notoriously brings many more photo ops. Perhaps that's why the company has chosen to announce availability of the case, which sports a lens capable of 170-degree viewing angles, on the cusp of year-end holidays. The waterproof OutRide is available now for $150 -- and that price includes a variety of mounts for handlebars, surfboards and helmets. A companion app is a free download from the App Store and lets users edit and share their recorded footage. The OutRide is currently only compatible with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, so those who are gifted Apple's latest handset will have to sit this one out.

Medical field works to reduce number of surgical mistakes

The bullet that struck Larney Johnson while he was playing basketball with friends punctured his kidney before lodging in his spine and immediately paralyzing him.

Paramedics rushed him to California Hospital Medical Center in Los Angeles, where surgeons repaired his kidney. But three years later, he said, doctors made a startling discovery: a surgical sponge had been left behind.

Johnson had to undergo a second operation to remove the sponge before spending six weeks in bed recovering.

"They are supposed to count every this and every that," said Johnson, 21. "Obviously someone didn't do the job."

Surgical errors have attracted widespread attention over the past several years, leading to new laws and policies. In 2007, California started requiring hospitals to report certain errors and fining them if the mistakes killed or seriously injured patients. The next year, Medicare stopped paying hospitals for the costs associated with certain errors. In 2011, Medicaid announced that it also would stop paying to fix certain preventable mistakes.

Nevertheless, about 2,000 patients nationwide have surgical material inadvertently left behind each year during operations. The errors have occurred during all types of procedures, including knee replacements, caesarean sections and gallbladder surgeries. The most common item left behind is a surgical sponge, but doctors have also left needles, gauze and other instruments inside patients.

A recent study by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine researchers estimated that surgeons leave sponges or other items inside patients about 39 times a week. The researchers analyzed medical malpractice judgments and out-of-court settlements on preventable hospital errors between 1990 and 2010 and identified about 4,860 malpractice payments connected to surgical items left behind. Only a fraction of the cases result in malpractice judgments.

In California alone, hospitals have reported such incidents more than 850 times over the last five years, according to the state's Department of Public Health. Of those, nearly 70 resulted in penalties against the hospitals because of the danger posed to the patient. Last week, the department issued fines to four hospitals for leaving surgical items inside patients. One involved a sponge used during a heart bypass surgery, even though the physician declared at the end of the operation that all the sponges used in the operation were accounted for. Typically, surgical teams count sponges and instruments before and after operations.

Experts say it's very rare for surgeons to mistakenly leave items inside patients given how many operations are performed each day in the U.S.

The problem occurs because hospitals lack effective practices to prevent the errors, said Verna Gibbs, a surgeon at UC San Francisco Medical Center and director of NoThing Left Behind, a surgical safety program.

"You can't just go to the individual nurses, or the individual doctors," she said. "You have to address the practices. Unless the hospitals change the practices of both, we will continue to have retained surgical items."

About 80% of the time there is a sponge retained, Gibbs said, the team had declared that the count was correct. People can make errors while counting, so hospitals need to instead focus on creating a way for them to always know that the sponges are accounted for, she said. One way is by making sure that every sponge used in surgery goes into a plastic holder after the operation. If the nurses or surgeons see an empty pocket, then they know one is missing.

New technologies can help surgical teams get it right. For example, surgeons can use sponges with a sort of bar code that has to be scanned at the beginning and end of surgery. Or they can wave a wand over the patient to detect sponges with radio frequency identification tags.

Gibbs also urges surgeons and nurses to work together to minimize errors.

Even with the new technologies and teamwork, humans are still going to make mistakes, said David Perrott, senior vice president and chief medical officer of the California Hospital Assn. Hospitals around the state are working with Gibbs and others to try to change the culture at hospitals and minimize the chance for those errors to occur, he said.

"We take this seriously," he said. "We have seen significant improvements ? but we need to do better."

The state Department of Public Health is also continuing to look at the issue, recently commissioning a study by UC Davis on preventing such mistakes. In addition, the department is proposing new regulations to allow fines for surgical errors even when they haven't caused serious harm to the patients.

Patients may not realize the problem for weeks, months or even years. Doctors usually discover a sponge when it causes an infection, or when a mass develops around it.

In Johnson's case, following the 2006 shooting and emergency operation, he had pain and recurring bladder infections. His urologist ordered a scan and discovered the sponge.

Johnson had the second operation at Marina del Rey Hospital. Johnson said he was frustrated by what happened but also relieved it wasn't something even more severe than a sponge. He has a new scar on his side but has not had any long-term repercussions from the retained sponge, he said.

The family sued the hospital and accepted a settlement but could not talk about the details because of a confidentiality agreement. Johnson said he never received an apology from the surgeon or the hospital.

The hospital released a statement saying that officials took the case "very seriously" and conducted a thorough investigation. Hospital officials also instituted a "team approach" to counting surgical sponges and instruments both before and after each procedure. "There has not been an event like this since," the statement read.

Johnson's mother, Sheila, said the experience was like something from a medical television drama, not something that she would have ever expected to happen to her son. Regardless of who is to blame, there needs to be more accountability so errors like this don't occur again, she said.

"You lose your faith in the medical system," she said. "It's not like you can just take a tag off of a garment. You have to be cut again."

Making Doomsday Plans? Think Turkey, France ... - Travel + Leisure

12.19.12

Sirince, Turkey

Looking for a relaxing place to spend the holidays?

Two spots in Europe may offer some respite from this year's holiday stress?if, that is, your major concern this season is the possibility of the ancient Mayanprophesied Doomsday on Dec. 21, 2012.

Indeed, while the rest of us are out vainly shopping for Furbies and iPads, other travelers are making long-term plans. UK travel search site Skyscanner recently announced that searches for one-way tickets to Turkey, for travel on the days leading up to Dec. 21, have spiked by nearly a third, while similar searches to the South of France have gone up by 41 percent.

Why those two locales? The western Turkey town of Sirince (pictured), for one, is reputedly near the area where, some believe, the Virgin Mary ascended into Heaven?and is also considered by many to be a safe haven for the predicted End of the World.

If that's not reassuring enough, consider the village of Bugarach in Southern France. Here, according to a striking number of Mayan-prophecy aficionados and UFO fans, the local mountain is quietly housing a small army of aliens and spaceships, which will be offering rides to greener pastures (or, let's be honest, planets) during the winter solstice.

The good news: the folks at Skyscanner, at least, are still feeling pretty optimistic about our collective future. A spokeswoman says that they've seen an even higher number of flight searches for trips on Dec. 22, which, she says, "suggests that not everyone is convinced the end of the world really is nigh."

DEVELOPING: Moline Train Depot Saved? | WQAD.com ? Quad ...

Posted on: 5:44 pm, December 18, 2012, by Angie Sharp, updated on: 10:25pm, December 18, 2012

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn is ?on board? with saving the Moline Train Depot, sending a letter on Tuesday, December 18th to the Moline Preservation Society saying the state will help pay to move the historic landmark.

Diann Moore, President of the Moline Preservation Society says the news is ?a wish granted.? More than 400 people have pledged more $73,000 of the $155,000 needed to move the Depot near Western Illinois University?s Quad Cities Riverfront Campus on River Drive in Moline.

?I?m as giddy as a little child,? says Diann. ?It?s just like Santa Claus has come and brought the biggest present. It is so exciting.?

News 8 obtained a letter from the Governor?s Office at 4:30pm on Tuesday, December 18th, which states ? ?I have directed the Illinois Department of Transportation to help you accomplish your mission, and cover the remaining Moline portion of the costs associated with moving the depot to its new home on the WIU Quad Cities campus.? Later on, it reads ? ?IDOT will cover the local remaining portion up to $82,000.?

The Depot has to get out of the way for a new I-74 Bridge, and was going to be torn down.

Some, though, may not be on board. Illinois? budget deficit is reportedly one of the worst in the nation. So, where this money is coming from, is still unknown.

?I?m not sure exactly where they?re going to come up with the money, but you?re only talking roughly $80,000 on a $1.2 million budget item to relocate the Depot that?s in the transportation budget so if you look at it the whole pie, $75-80,000 is pretty small,? says Moline Mayor Don Welvaert.

?All I know is we?ve got the money and that we?re going to be able to save that building,? says Diann. ?Preservation so many times is on the losing end and you don?t have very many victories. This is one of them.?

After Sandy, NYC Food Stamp Centers Crowded With Hungry Families

Kayla Noell was having a tough time even before the hurricane. The 21-year-old single mom uses the $526 in food stamps she receives each month to feed herself, her son, and up to eight family members in the Marlboro public housing development where she lives in Gravesend, Brooklyn, just north of Coney Island.

When Hurricane Sandy hit, it flooded the first floor of Noell's building, cutting power and trapping her inside. After the water receded, all the food Noell had purchased with her Electronic Benefits Transfer card would soon spoil. "We need to get it replaced or we'll be hungry," she said.

In the best of times, the government offices that dispense assistance to poor people are full of confusion, bureaucracy and failed aspirations. On Monday, the first normal business day since Hurricane Sandy upended much of life in the nation's most populous metropolitan area, the scene at those social service offices that were open was particularly chaotic, with unusually large crowds massing in pursuit of help. Many, like Noell, had come to look into another infusion of food stamps to replace groceries that spoiled after the storm.

On Saturday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered $65 million in new food stamp money to be automatically placed onto the cards of families who live in storm ravaged areas. As of Monday, most had yet to receive the replacement benefits.

"I came earlier this week for emergency food stamps but they said it would take some time to process my application," said Maria Santana, of Staten Island, while sitting in the waiting room of the food stamp center in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Santana has been receiving food stamps for five months. Like Noell, she saw all her food spoil when the hurricane wiped out power to her house on Faber Street in Staten Island.

"An emergency is an emergency," she said. "I don't understand why it takes so long."

Benefits for those whose food spoiled after the storm will be issued sometime Tuesday and Wednesday night, according to Connie Ress, a spokeswoman for the New York City's Human Resources Administration, which runs the centers. In the meantime, people like Noell are depending on food pantries, soup kitchens and emergency hotlines for meals. Six temporary Human Resources Administration offices in hard-hit locations across the city are also offering limited disaster relief services.

In addition to having half of their benefits replaced automatically, food stamp recipients in storm damaged areas will be able to apply for the other half, Cuomo said in a press release. Those outside the designated storm damaged zip codes can also apply for replacement benefits to be credited to their accounts. As of Nov. 1, New York food stamp recipients can also purchase hot and prepared food with their benefits, something which is usually prohibited.

Ress' team managed to get a key food stamp center in the Rockaways open Monday, a huge step for the devastated area. By by Wednesday, all 16 centers will be open.

But on Coney Island and in lower Manhattan, three centers remained closed Monday. On Coney Island, the center directly across from the famous beach still bore a brown smudge from the nine feet of seawater that had filled it during the storm. Around noon, as a cleaning crew bustled in and out of the building, a row of security guards stood outside, turning away Noell and dozens of others who showed up seeking assistance.

"We've had two to five-hundred people show up here today," said Alexanderia, a security guard who declined to give her last name. "It's the same conversation over and over. I don't know how you can expect the office to be open. We're as close to the water as you can be."

Alexanderia sent many of those people to the Human Resources Agency's temporary office in a nearby lot, where FEMA, the Red Cross, and other charities were handing out meals and registering people for programs.

Christine Garner, who lives on the still-powerless fourteenth floor of one of the public housing complexes on Coney Island, showed up at the office on Monday for an appointment to get assistance paying her rent, which was due on Nov. 1. Seeing it closed, she wasn't how she would come up with the money. "We have to keep a roof over our heads, storm or not," she said.

This winter is extremely cool in around the globe, and plenty of international locations have extremely heavey snowfall throughout the strong winter Canada Goose Jackets. And unluckly, my nation may be the coolest place on the globe, which not far from north of manchester Person of polish lineage, and so the winter here?s really cool Canada Goose sale I do believe for the people people who have been sailed in Russlia, you must know my experiencing. But when you won?t ever came to Italy, you can?t suppose that how cool the weather is. The truth is, We do unlike the wintertime in Italy, because I can not endure the bittercold climate. Sometimes in the event the weather is really undesirable that your temperature practically underneath 40 degree, you merely work from home and can not go in town.
I was so angry that, only one morning, each time a pal been to to my home along with the weather is really cool for the reason that morning. When she arrivel inside my home, she just appears like she in no way ran out explained. Due to the fact she would not say anything in regards to the weather is so unsightly. I was so confused about that, and I requested her, she explained because she put on an awesome Nova scotia Goose quilted hat. It?s very comfortable, and will keep her physique comfortable and comfy during the cold months. And today, I know why she is not cool throughout the winter.
I am a university student who?s really into accumulating the world trend reports. Plus, We have my own, personal gown design, More than likely that my gown design is very exclusive. Now, winter is coming, and so i must place lots of stuff on my physique. And we all know, once you place lots of outfits in your physique, you are unable to pick the design you truly like, because during the cold months, retain your body comfortable is the central points. But for me, I am hunting for a elegant strategy to use outfits during the cold months.
Thank you for The almighty I found the most effective which we don?t require gown just like a go up. Once I researched the language gentle winter outfits on the net, I found a sort of outfits that referred to as Nova scotia Goose. And many folks explained they have got really good qualities, and when you use a Nova scotia Goose hat as outfit, you don?t to utilize all kinds of other outfits inside of. I Really am enthusiastic about this Nova scotia Goose hat. After which I get a dark Moncer hat inside the Internat store. I?m happy to report, they are really comfortable I put them on which has a big t-tank top inside of and don?t really feel cool once i go out.
I can not end caring them!
From your entire luxury brand name, Nova scotia Goose is my best loved brand name throughout the winter. I experienced a good amount of Nova scotia Goose outfits, sneakers and bags. I enjoy them quite definitely. And my girlfriends explained that we?re in love with the Nova scotia Goose outfits. Nicely, I need to confess that we?re a major lover of Nova scotia Goose.
For me personally, if Some purchase Nova scotia Goose outfits for myself throughout the winter, I will really feel not comfortable, and i believe now, I can not without having Nova scotia Goose outfits throughout the winter. I am the person who extremely really cares about the form, and also I worry about what I am about to use during the cold months. Generally, I do not like to use too many outfits throughout the winter, I do think that makes folks seem so excess fat, and also I thought extremely odd to utilize too much. I Really should have a Monclear vest or hat so will just use two or three surfaces during the cold months and will not really feel cool.
I usually experienced put on a big t-tank top inside of, along with a Monclear hat outside, which make me really feel fresh new. Plus often once i travelled inside of, I recently use a big t-tank top, that is certainly adequate, because I have aircondition in my home.
So we could not without having Nova scotia Goose during the cold months.

Early voting results favor Obama, but popular vote remains uncertain

Thirty million votes are already cast for the next president of the Unites States, and the turnout so far favors President Barack Obama over GOP challenger Mitt Romney.

The contest for the White House has hardly begun, however: These results, from 34 states and the District of Columbia, account only for the party affiliation of those who have voted early. This obscures all those coveted independent voters that may defy loyalty with their registered party, a major factor in deciding such a tight election.

According to data collected by the Associated Press, key states such as Iowa, Florida, Ohio, Nevada and North Carolina see greater Democratic turnout, with the president's campaign adviser David Axelrod expecting Obama to preserve many of these leads into Election Day.

In North Carolina, the president leads Romney in early votes by 16 percent, in Iowa, 11 percent. It's much closer in other key states such as Ohio, where Obama leads by 6 percent, or Florida, where he's ahead by a mere 3 percent.

Yet there have also been reversals for the president: In Colorado, where the president won by nearly 9 percent in 2008, Republicans have the edge.

Other factors besides the independent vote color these results: Republicans often turn out with much greater enthusiasm on Election Day. Also, in this election there's been a closing of the gap in turnout in battleground states, and the combination seems to favor Republicans.

Ohio is a clear example. Monday on CNBC, Romney supporter and the state's Republican senator, Rob Portman, boasted that the net gain of early votes for his party this year, in his state, is about 200,000.

Still, without a clear portrait of the independent vote, there's no way to tell what surprises are in store for each battleground state. A clear view won't arrive until the final moments of election night.

Banned From Baby Showers: Her First Period

When I was in 3rd grade, I read Judy Blume's "Are You There God? It's Me Margaret" and became obsessed with getting my first period.? Unfortunately, I had another 4 long years to wait.? It happened at church on a Sunday night in late October of 7th grade.? It was the best day of my life.? My mom took me to the store for pads and told me I was now a woman.? Wow.? From a girl to a woman just like that.

At almost 42, I can tell a big shift in my cycles.? Two days and I'm done.? My two oldest daughters have both started in the last year.? One was excited (then 7th grader) and the other, not-so-much (almost 6th grader).? They both knew about it, but you never really know what to expect until it happens.

I asked the question this week on my Banned From Baby Showers Facebook page if women remember the exact date they first started and if they were happy or upset.? I've thought a lot about the answers this week and wanted to talk about it a bit here.? Here is a sampling of the responses:

Hurricane Sandy Propels YouTube, Red Cross, And Flashlight Apps To Top Spots In App Store

photo_001Hurricane Sandy has clearly taken its toll on the East Coast. At least 7.4 million homes and businesses are without power this morning across seven states. Public transit has been shut down in New York City, along with the Nasdaq and NYSE. Frankenstorm has truly been unprecedented, and so, unprecedented changes are to follow in the tech world. For example, the top three apps in the Apple App Store at this very moment are YouTube, Hurricane by American Red Cross, and Flashlight by iHandy inc.

How The Internet Is Re-Wiring Our Brains | Home Wealth Project

Check out this look into the ways the Internet actually changes our brain structure. Sort of scary.

    Facebook Psychology
    Source: www.bestmastersinpsychology.com

According the graphic, which lists several reputable sources here are some of the more crazy facts:

    - The average attention span of Americans has gone from 12 seconds to 8 seconds in only a decade
    - People who have been using the Internet for a while appear to have a fundamentally altered pre-frontal cortex
    - Internet signals (like that little red thing in Facebook) trigger dopamine responses related to love and sex, causing us to come back for more
    - The average person sits in front of a screen 8.5 hours per day

Just one more reason to step away from the screen and get out of that non-stop digital hum.

SHIP BOTTOM, N.J. (AP) ? Forget distinctions like tropical storm or hurricane. Don't get fixated on a particular track. Wherever it hits, the behemoth storm plodding up the East Coast will afflict a third of the country with sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow, say officials who warned millions in coastal areas to get out of the way.

"We're looking at impact of greater than 50 to 60 million people," said Louis Uccellini, head of environmental prediction for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

As Hurricane Sandy trekked north from the Caribbean ? where it left nearly five dozen dead ? to meet two other powerful winter storms, experts said it didn't matter how strong the storm was when it hit land: The rare hybrid storm that follows will cause havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.

Governors from North Carolina, where steady rains were whipped by gusting winds Saturday night, to Connecticut declared states of emergency. Delaware ordered mandatory evacuations for coastal communities by 8 p.m. Sunday.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who was criticized for not interrupting a vacation in Florida while a snowstorm pummeled the state in 2010, broke off campaigning for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in North Carolina on Friday to return home.

"I can be as cynical as anyone," said Christie, who declared a state of emergency Saturday. "But when the storm comes, if it's as bad as they're predicting, you're going to wish you weren't as cynical as you otherwise might have been."

Eighty-five-year-old former sailor Ray Leonard agreed. And he knows to heed warnings.

Leonard and two crewmates in his 32-foot sailboat, Satori, rode out 1991's infamous "perfect storm," made famous by the Sebastian Junger best-selling book of the same name, before being plucked from the Atlantic off Martha's Vineyard, Mass., by a Coast Guard helicopter.

"Don't be rash," Leonard said Saturday from his home in Fort Myers, Fla. "Because if this does hit, you're going to lose all those little things you've spent the last 20 years feeling good about."

Sandy weakened briefly to a tropical storm Saturday but was soon back up to Category 1 strength, packing 75 mph winds. It was about 260 miles (420 kilometers) south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and moving northeast at 13 mph as of 5 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

The storm was expected to continue moving parallel to the Southeast coast most of the day and approach the coast of the mid-Atlantic states by Monday night, before reaching southern New England later in the week.

It was so big, however, and the convergence of the three storms so rare, that "we just can't pinpoint who is going to get the worst of it," said Rick Knabb, director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Officials are particularly worried about the possibility of subway flooding in New York City, said Uccellini, of NOAA.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo told the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to prepare to shut the city's subways, buses and suburban trains. The city closed the subways before Hurricane Irene last year, and a Columbia University study predicted that an Irene surge just 1 foot higher would have paralyzed lower Manhattan.

Up and down the Eastern Seaboard and far inland, officials urged residents and businesses to prepare in ways big and small.

On Saturday evening, Amtrak began canceling train service to parts of the East Coast, including between Washington, D.C., and New York. Airlines started moving planes out of airports to avoid damage and adding Sunday flights out of New York and Washington in preparation for flight cancellations on Monday.

The Virginia National Guard was authorized to call up to 500 troops to active duty for debris removal and road-clearing, while homeowners stacked sandbags at their front doors in coastal towns.

"You never want to be too naive, but ultimately, it's not in our hands anyway," said Andrew Ferencsik, 31, as he purchased plywood and 2-by-4 lumber from a Home Depot in Lewes, Del.

Utility officials warned rains could saturate the ground, causing trees to topple into power lines, and told residents to prepare for several days at home without power.

President Barack Obama was monitoring the storm and working with state and locals governments to make sure they get the resources needed to prepare, administration officials said.

In North Carolina's Outer Banks, a group of about 20 people was forced to wait out the storm on Portsmouth Island, a former fishing village that is now uninhabited and accessible only by private ferry.

"We tried to get off the island and the ferry service shut down on us," said Bill Rowley, 49, of Rocky Mount, N.C.

Rowley said he could see 15-foot seas breaking over the island's dunes, enough to bring water to the island's interior.

"We'll be inundated and it'll probably be worse tomorrow," he said.

In New Jersey, hundreds of coastal residents started moving inland. Christie's emergency declaration will force the shutdown of Atlantic City's 12 casinos for only the fourth time in the 34-year history of legalized gambling here. City officials said they would begin evacuating the gambling hub's 30,000 residents at noon Sunday, busing them to mainland shelters and schools.

The storm also forced the presidential campaign to juggle schedules. Romney scrapped plans to campaign Sunday in Virginia and switched his schedule for the day to Ohio. First lady Michelle Obama canceled an appearance in New Hampshire for Tuesday, and Obama moved a planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm. He also canceled appearances in Northern Virginia on Monday and Colorado on Tuesday.

PFT: Fujita rips Goodell? |? Players will keep fighting

    Rex RyanAP

This morning, Jets owner Woody Johnson made a clear commitment to starting quarterback Mark Sanchez.? Johnson also said quarterback Tim Tebow will be with the team for three years, the balance of his rookie deal.

This afternoon, coach Rex Ryan indirectly but unmistakably disputed Johnson?s account, as to both players.

As to Sanchez, Ryan said the fourth-year starter will remain the starter.? But Ryan wasn?t nearly as clear about the future as Johnson was regarding Sanchez.

?A lot of things can happen,? Ryan said, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.? ?And I?m not going to deal with what ifs because . . . I?m telling you right now [that] he?s our starting quarterback this week, barring injury.? And things happen.? I feel really confident in Mark. . . .? I?ve never wavered on him.?

Ryan revisited the issue later in the media session.? ?He?s our starter.? What do you want me to say?? Ryan said.? ?He?s our starter.? He?s our starter this week. He?s our starter.?

The key words seem to be ?this week,? and the reason for Ryan?s reluctance to give an open-ended commitment to Sanchez is obvious.? Even if the team doesn?t plan to bench a guy, sometimes the threat of benching a guy helps get the most out of him.

It?s a tactic that Ryan has used twice in the past two years.? And Ryan admitted to it in his 2011 book, Play Like You Mean It.

?I started giving our backup quarterback, Mark Brunell, more snaps in practice just to let Sanchez know I wasn?t kidding around,? Ryan wrote regarding a rough spot Sanchez hit in 2010.? ?Now, it got Sanchez?s ass going sideways a little bit.? He wasn?t happy at all.? When he was in my office, he was pouting a little about it, but I could give less than two shits about that.?

As to Tebow, Ryan also was less absolute than Johnson regarding the question of whether Tebow will be on the team for three years.

?When we traded for Tim, we understood his contract situation,? Ryan said.? ?We brought him in because we think Tim?s a good football player.? With that being said ? and this goes for any player ? we think the guys will be with us throughout the length of the contract, but if, you know . . . there?s no guarantee there that if there?s , you know, whatever, an opportunity to help your football team. . . .? If we see fit . . . whatever?s in the best interest of our team. . . .? I guess no player is totally guaranteed that they?ll be there.? But clearly he?s a guy that we thought a lot of and that?s why we traded for him.? And still think a lot of.?

Ryan surely can?t think a lot of Johnson making commitments that don?t mesh with the strategic objectives of the football operation, and that?s one of the reasons why some teams insist on having only ?one voice? speak for the franchise.? Since the ?once voice? approach likely isn?t practical in this day and age, the folks who do the talking for a team need to be equipped at all times with comprehensive talking points ? and they need to know how to stick to them.

Russia's singing granny finds her father's grave

MOSCOW (AP) ? To find her father's World War II grave, Natalya Pugachyova had to become a celebrity.

She is one of the Buranovskiye Babushki, a group of singing grandmothers who ended up second at this year's Eurovision Song Contest with their catchy tune sung in the Udmurt language, a distant relative of Finnish. As the oldest and smallest member of the group, the 76-year-old Pugachyova became a star of the pan-European contest, whose millions of devoted fans love its kitschy fun.

Her newfound fame helped her find the grave of her father, who disappeared while fighting the Nazis in 1942.

At a press conference she mentioned her father, Yakov Begeshev, who disappeared when she was 6 years old. The last letter they received from him came during a battle in the Voronezh region south of Moscow, which he described as being so fierce that he was unlikely to survive.

Nearly 27 million Soviet soldiers and civilians died in World War II, and tens of thousands are still listed as missing. War enthusiasts roam the forests and swamps of western Russia in search of the remains of soldiers and their aluminum dog tags that identify them.

Nina Geryusheva of the Bailiffs Service in the musical group's native Russian region of Udmurtia said its volunteers set out to find Pugachyova's missing father. After a lot of phone calls and official requests, they were able to identify the mass grave where he was buried.

"To say she was surprised is to say the least," Geryusheva said by telephone.

Russian state television showed Pugachyova's visit over the weekend to the village of Malaya Vereika in the Voronezh region, where she saw her father's name among those engraved on memorial walls at the mass grave.

"Even I sobbed," Pugachyova said. "So many years, so many winters, I didn't know."

Pugachyova brought a handful of soil from her mother's grave to mix with that of her father's, and took a handful back to do the same at her mother's grave.

That way, her parents could be together.

50 Shades of Grey Gets a Writer

    50 Shades of Grey Movie

The kinky erotic pop phenomenon 50 Shades of Grey has finally landed ? or shall we say, tied down ? a writer! British actress/scribe Kelly Marcel, who co-created the short-lived Steven Spielberg-produced series Terra Nova and scripted the upcoming Mary Poppins pic Saving Mr. Banks, will adapt E.L. James' S&M romance about a young woman who falls for Christian Grey, a damaged dreamboat with a bondage fetish.

Marcel's a surprise choice for the hot property given her relatively scant writing credits; here's hoping her script keeps all the salaciously sexy allure of the books, which will be one of the bigger challenges Universal and Focus face with their big-screen adaptation.

One hurdle: Making a 50 Shades of Grey movie that's half as great as this fan-made trailer:

    Oh, man. Never gets old.

Once a script's in place, the next trick will be casting their perfect Christian Grey. Someone not too old, not too young, the picture of male perfection and virility. An actor capable of pulling off both brute sensual dominance and crippling emotional trauma. A dude who knows how to wear a suit.

Well, Marcel did co-found a theater company with Tom Hardy after the two worked together on Nicholas Refn's Bronson, which she re-wrote. (Another fun fact: Dad Terry Marcel wrote and directed 1980's Hawk the Slayer.) Maybe she can make a phone call... who's down with casting Tom Hardy as Christian Grey?

    The official press release:

UNIVERSAL CITY, CA, October 8, 2012?Universal Pictures and Focus Features today announced that Kelly Marcel will write the screenplay to the highly anticipated film adaptation of ?Fifty Shades of Grey.? Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti will produce the film based on E L James? #1 bestselling book, alongside James. The announcement was made by Universal Pictures Co-Chairman, Donna Langley and Focus Features? Chief Executive Officer, James Schamus.

Marcel wrote the 2011 Black List script, Saving Mr. Banks, the story of Walt Disney?s twenty-year pursuit of the film rights to author P.L. Travers? novel, ?Mary Poppins,? and the rocky relationship that formed between the two. The film is currently in production at Walt Disney Studios starring Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson and Colin Farrell with John Lee Hancock directing. Marcel served as the co-creator and executive producer of the Amblin/FOX-TV series Terra Nova, for which she wrote the series? pilot episode. She will also produce The Madonnas Of Echo Park for HBO.

?Kelly?s work demonstrates her flawless structural technique and passionate commitment to emotion, humor and depth of character which is particularly visible in the celebrated screenplay for the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks,? said De Luca. ?We were all taken with the depth and passion of Kelly?s engagement with the characters and world E L James has created, and we knew she was the right person to augment our Fifty Shades family,? added Brunetti.

Universal Pictures and Focus Features acquired the rights to the three books in the ?Fifty Shades of Grey? trilogy in March of this year. Focus Features will market and distribute the first film in partnership with Universal. ?Fifty Shades of Grey? has become a global phenomenon and the trilogy has been translated in 45 languages worldwide since its release. In the U.S. alone, the ?Fifty Shades? trilogy has sold over 32 million copies in e-book and print, making it one of the fastest selling book series ever.

?Fifty Shades of Grey? follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele. Subsequent novels in the series, ?Fifty Shades Darker? (September 2011) and ?Fifty Shades Freed? (January 2012) explore the couple?s deepening relationship. Marcel was represented in the deal by WME and Casarotto Ramsay & Associates Limited.
