A Cheap HTC One on Sprint Is Your Deal of the Day

A Cheap HTC One on Sprint Is Your Deal of the Day

The HTC One Google Edition running stock Android that Google announced earlier today is pretty cool, but it's still a $600 contract-free phone, and most people opt for a carrier-subsidized handset. If you like HTC Sense and you're eligible for a Sprint upgrade, you can get the HTC One for $80 with a new contract.

Sprint's been running a promo that takes $100 off a new smartphone when you port your number. (You may have seen the big-ass ads on Gizmodo.) That's nice, but Amazon's price-matched deal is a little better: a new Sprint subscriber gets the HTC One for $80, which is $120 less than most other places. If you're renewing your contract or adding a line, it's $100 per handset. No number porting necessary, unless you want to. [Amazon]

Also worth noting: Amazon's selling the contract-free HTC One for $550?$50 less than the Google Edition or an unlocked version from HTC.

A Big, Beautiful, Hi-Resolution Screen With a Three-Year Warranty

A Cheap HTC One on Sprint Is Your Deal of the Day

The current standard in terms of expensive screens right now is a 2560 x 1440 IPS panel?the same kind of screen that goes into 27" iMacs. You've got options?for instance, Monoprice sells a very nice unbranded version for just over $400. But lots of people would rather buy from an established manufacturer: for one, the warranties tend to be stronger.

Dell's nicest 27" IPS monitor is on sale on Amazon right now for $585, which isn't the lowest price we've ever seen, but still a pretty slick price considering most other places have it for $650. [Amazon]

J. Press is an old-school preppy clothes-maker that takes "Ivy Style" seriously?there are four locations, and they're in New Haven, Cambridge, New York City, and Washington DC. Some of their sack suits haven't changed in over 50 years. They're pretty much a cooler Brooks Brothers?at least, that's what Japanese hipsters think.

If I were forced to only own one tie, I'd probably opt for a navy grenadine tie?it works with almost any outfit. The version J. Press makes is very nice, and they were already on sale before the code EXTRA10 took another 10% off. Shipping kind of kills the deal, but it's still a pretty sick opportunity, especially for Father's Day.

Interviewing Tips for Startups ? Part 3 - Yourstory.in - Startup Stories

Busy BusinessmanThis post is part 3 of a 3 part article on interviewing tips for startup. The earlier parts are available here ? Part 1; Part 2

In part 1 of this article, I shared 3 key tips for conducting interviews. In part 2, I delved deeper into the specific nuances of the Behavioural Event Interview (BEI) and how to conduct one. In this concluding part, I am sharing some additional guidelines and suggestions for improving the effectiveness of the interview process:

Don?t write off people in the first?5 minutes

Very often, we mentally reject the candidate very early on in the interview. Carrying on after that becomes tedious; interviewers either abruptly end the session or tend to switch off. I would warn against this. The candidate may just be having a bad day or is taking some time to get comfortable. It?s also possible that in continuing the interview, you find that the candidate could be a good fit for another role. If nothing else, remember that the candidate has taken time out to come and meet you; extend some courtesy.

Make it fun

Yes, hiring is serious business. That doesn?t mean that the interview has to be boring. People open up more when they are comfortable and it is when guards are down that you could learn a lot more about the candidate. Some people also get nervous at interviews and you may miss a good employee who just didn?t interview well under pressure. And of course, it needs to be fun for you too ? don?t we already have enough tedious tasks on our plate! According to Mitch Joel (President of Twist Image), ?Don?t conduct an interview, have a conversation.?

Take your time

An interview should ideally not be for more than 30-40 minutes. That said, don?t let a time limit constrain your ability to fully assess the candidate. It is important for you to be suitably convinced about your assessment. If you must close the interview before you are fully convinced about the assessment, make notes about areas to probe further. If there is another round, share these notes with the next interviewer. Alternately, you could schedule a subsequent telephone call with the candidate.

It?s your chance to pitch

Remember that it?s not just you who is assessing the candidate but it?s also the candidate assessing you and your company. Your entire recruitment effort comes to naught if the selected candidate rejects your offer. So use the interviews to also reinforce the image of your company and do a soft sell.

Try out something different

Experienced candidates often know what questions to expect and can come with some canned answers. I recently came across 2 interesting interview tricks to beat this. One is to go quiet for a few seconds after the candidate has answered a question. The moment of silence is likely to coax out more information from the candidate. After the canned words are done, you are likely to hear something genuine come out. The other is to ask something completely random or whacky. This is apparently a common practice at Microsoft; a long time favourite is ?Why are manhole covers round?? These kind of questions tell you about the candidate?s creativity, ability to not get rattled and in general, deal with ambiguity.

Don?t drag the process

I know some highly respected companies that conduct 8-10 rounds of interviews and are actually very proud of it! I personally feel that 2-3 rounds are ideal and anything more than 4, overkill. If the interviewers have done justice to the interview, there is nothing that 10 rounds will tell you that 3 rounds won?t. Too many rounds make the process lengthy and tedious for your company and the candidate as well. Moreover, the perception of the job gets built up so high that the selected candidate will invariably be in for disappointment after joining. Try to schedule all the rounds on the same day so that the candidate doesn?t have to come multiple times.

5 Reasons Businesses Don't Blog and Answers to Those Objections

5 Reasons Businesses Don't Blog and Answers to Their Objections

As my month of experimenting with list posts draws to a close, I find myself thinking about blogging and all the work I put into it. I think about the work my clients put into blogging. And it is work. I blog nearly every day, at least five days a week, and it?s no surprise I strongly believe in blogging and the benefits it brings. But not everyone agrees. Quite often when I meet with a client, prospective client, or am speaking to a group of business owners, I hear a number of objections as to why they won?t, or can?t, blog.

As a result, I?ve gotten pretty good at responding to those objections. Let me just state that when I respond to these objections in person, it takes on an entirely different tone, and there is a conversation with give and take, not just my response. And as you read these, not only will you recognize these objections, but you?ll understand that most of them are merely variations on a theme. They are all connected in some way.

1. I don?t think blogging works

And of course, there?s the cousin of this, ?Blogging is too much work for too little payoff.? First off, define what you mean when you say ?work.? How do you define when something works? If it?s a machine, it turns on and does its intended task. Voila! It works. But the notion that blogging doesn?t work, is usually a mindset issue. What they generally mean is that it doesn?t work fast enough; you can?t see the results overnight. Exactly. But you are building something powerful that will pay dividends in the long run. You are creating a strong body of work online that will show your customers you know what you are talking about, and can be trusted. More importantly, even if the proverbial ?no one? reads your blog, or comments on it, you are getting something even better. You are creating content and updating your website in ways that keeps those Google spiders happy, and will be your best SEO friend for a long time to come.

Remember: Your customers are spending more time online, and they are using the internet more often to research you and other businesses. A strong blog goes a long way in placing you higher in search engine results, and in front of more eyes. Blogging works. Just not in the sense of driving thousands of customers through your doors tomorrow. Building a strong, positive reputation goes a long way in making your business sustainable over the long haul.

2. I don?t have time

This might be the objection I hear the most. And it?s understandable. After all, many of the people I work with are overworked and understaffed. Small businesses and nonprofits with just a few people. In some cases, it might be a business of one. The thought of adding blogging to your already busy 16 hour days might seem daunting. But there are a few issues here. First, if in fact you believe that blogging is important, and that it can work for you, you?ll make time for it. More on priorities in the next point. Perhaps you?ll be clearing away time that you are spending on other things that aren?t as productive. I?d bet that many of you are doing things during your work day and week just because you?ve always one them.?Now is a good time to reevaluate what you do in a normal day or week, and see if there are some things that you can cut out, or even reduce, clearing away time for blogging.

And then there?s the issue of how much time blogging really takes. I blog nearly every day, but would never expect my clients to do that. At least not at first. A few points about the time it takes to write a blog post:

Think about it: 52 short blog posts a year, some of which are written by other people. Suddenly it becomes much more manageable.

3. I can?t afford it

This is the kissing cousin to ?I don?t have time.? After all, time is money. For some, it?s a matter of financial expenditure. Putting a blog on your website could cost something in terms of getting your web designer to either add the blog, or for some of my clients, having to get an entirely new site, complete with a blog. That costs money. Often that money isn?t readily available. But I go back to my argument in the first point, that if it?s important, and you believe it is worth it, you will spend the money. I am continually surprised at how many businesses either have no website, or a really bad website that they can?t update.

I don?t mean to sound snarky, but hey, this is 2013 folks. If you?re not online, with a strong presence, there?s a good chance you?ll suffer. You can?t NOT afford to be online, and blogging is a big part of that. Even if you have to pay someone to do it for you. If you don?t believe me, I?d love to sit down and chat through the scenarios with you. It?s not a matter of spending the money; it?s a matter of when and how you spend the money.

4. I?m not a writer

You?re a business person; a manager. Your job is not about writing, so I get that. Many of us aren?t writers, or at least don?t think we are. Writing comes easier to some than it does to others. But again, there are options.?I have one client who sends me notes or sits down and chats with me about ideas and concepts. In about five or ten minutes (see! It doesn?t take too much time!) I get all I need to write quality posts that help her business build a strong online presence that both her customers and the search engines like.

Add to this that blogging isn?t just about you writing content. Remember, in the second point I mentioned guest bloggers? Guest bloggers can be a huge help in creating content for your blog, and they can be ?your employees, customers, or representatives of other businesses.

Finally, not all blogs require a lot of writing. Maybe you can sit down in front of a video camera and speak, with or without notes, for one or two minutes. That?s all it takes, plus you get the added bonus of a presence on YouTube that links to your blog or vlog. Or in some cases, a series of pictures with a minimal amount of text will do. A lot depends on what make sense for you and your business, and what you are comfortable with. But certainly don?t be intimidated by the prospect of having to write a lot if you aren?t comfortable as a writer.

One final note: I know a lot of people who say they can?t write, but actually can. Give it a chance and find your voice. You might be surprised. I?ll often sit down with a client and help them write a few blog posts that might ever get published, just to show them that they can do it.

5. I have nothing to write about/nothing to say

Pish posh! (Said in my best British accent). You have a business or nonprofit. I?m assuming you love what you do (or did love it at one time) and are passionate about it. ?I hope that you are still excited about telling people about your business and what you do; the products and services that you offer. I?d bet that if I sat in your office or business for a few hours, and listened and observed, I?d be able to come up with a full year?s worth of blog post ideas for you. Might not even take that long. You probably spend a lot of time educating your customers and potential clients about what you do. That?s exactly the kind of things you write about on a blog. You might have what some would consider to be the most boring business in the world, but people still come to you and have questions, which you answer.

Take that passion, and the love for your business, and turn it into content for the web via your blog.

And like I said earlier, even if you think it?s boring and no one ever stops by and reads it or comments, don?t fret. That might not be the real value of your blog. Worst case scenario: you are creating content that Google loves and will help you with search engine optimization. That, in and of itself, is huge.

I could certainly go on and on about all of these, and would even welcome the chance to sit down and discuss them further with you if you have questions.

Are any of these objections the ones that you have? What other objections do you have, or have you heard, and how would you answer those objections?

Tomorrow on the blog I?ll be summing up my findings from my experiment in using list posts, particularly lists of 5, for the entire month of May. I discovered a few interesting things as you consider whether or not to use list posts on your blog.

Judge rejects legal challenges by accused Colorado theater gunman

By Keith Coffman

DENVER (Reuters) - A Colorado judge rejected challenges on Wednesday to the state's insanity defense statute and death penalty law by accused movie theater spree gunman James Holmes, resolving a key legal hurdle in the sensational case.

Lawyers for Holmes, accused of killing 12 moviegoers and wounding dozens more in a rampage last July, had argued that the state's insanity law was unconstitutional because it forces their client to cooperate with court-appointed psychiatrists.

They also contended that compelling the 25-year-old former neuroscience graduate student to reveal information to mental health experts that could be used against him at trial violates his constitutional right against self-incrimination. But Arapahoe County District Judge Carlos Samour disagreed.

"The provisions in the insanity statutes and the death penalty statute challenged by the defendant are constitutional," Samour wrote in a 51-page ruling, denying the defense's motions in their entirety.

The defense arguments were the latest legal wrangling surrounding last year's mass shooting in suburban Denver during a midnight screening of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises."

Holmes, who is charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder, is scheduled to stand trial in February. Prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty if he is convicted.

In March, then-presiding Judge William Sylvester entered a standard not guilty plea for Holmes, but allowed his attorneys to change that to not guilty by reason of insanity.

Samour, who took over the case in April, has ruled that there was "good cause" for Holmes' lawyers to change the plea.

However, Samour said he could not rule on whether he would accept it until the challenges to the insanity defense and death penalty law were resolved, so he could properly advise Holmes of the ramifications of such a plea.

Public defenders for Holmes have said in court pleadings that the former University of Colorado graduate student has been hospitalized twice since his arrest, once for "potential self-inflicted injuries."

He has grown a shaggy beard and longer hair since he was arrested outside the movie theater minutes after the shooting spree. At his first court appearance days after the shooting, he looked dazed and sleepy with his hair dyed orange and red.

Neither prosecutors nor attorneys for Holmes have publicly commented on the case due to a court-imposed gag order.

    Lose the parentheses here:

date2013 x();

    That's prototyping a function named x that returns a date2013 object.

Rob Lowe cast as JFK in National Geographic film

NEW YORK (AP) ? Rob Lowe will portray President John F. Kennedy in a National Geographic film about the former president's 1963 assassination.

The National Geographic Channel said Tuesday that filming for "Killing Kennedy" would begin next month in Richmond, Va. The film is expected to air around the 50th anniversary of the shooting later this year and is based on the book by Bill O'Reilly.

National Geographic already had a hit earlier this year with an adaptation of another of the Fox News Channel anchor's books, "Killing Lincoln."

In addition to Lowe, the movie will feature Ginnifer Goodwin as the first lady and Michelle Trachtenberg as Marina Oswald.

Japan politician apologizes to US for sex comment

TOKYO (AP) ? An outspoken Japanese politician apologized Monday for saying U.S. troops should patronize adult entertainment businesses as a way to reduce sex crimes, but defended another inflammatory remark about Japan's use of sex slaves before and during World War II.

Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto, co-leader of an emerging nationalist party, said his remarks two weeks ago rose from a "sense of crisis" about cases of sexual assaults by U.S. military personnel on Japanese civilians in Okinawa, where a large number of U.S. troops are based under a bilateral security treaty.

Hashimoto also said he had not tried to condone a system of so-called comfort women, but meant to say military authorities at the time, not only in Japan but in many other countries, considered it necessary.

He denied any intention to avoid Japan's responsibility over its wartime actions, adding he wanted to shed light on sex offenses in the battlefield and encourage open debate on the problem today.

"I understand that my remark could be construed as an insult to the U.S. forces and to the American people" and was inappropriate, he told a news conference at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan in Tokyo. "I retract this remark and express an apology."

Hashimoto, a lawyer and former TV personality, created an uproar with comments to journalists two weeks ago about Japan's modern and wartime sexual services, which he said were misquoted. The comments added to recent anger in neighboring countries that suffered from Japan's wartime aggression and have complained about a lack of atonement for the atrocities.

Hashimoto said then that the practice of using women from across Asia to work in front-line brothels before and during World War II was necessary to maintain discipline and provide relaxation for soldiers. He added that on a recent visit to the southern island of Okinawa, he suggested to the U.S. commander there that his troops "make better use" of the legal sex industry "to control the sexual energy of those tough guys."

On Monday, Hashimoto called the use of comfort women an "inexcusable act that violated the dignity and human rights of the women, in which large numbers of Korean and Japanese were included." He did not mention women from other countries, such as China, the Philippines and Indonesia, where many teenagers were forced into sex slavery.

He said Japan must express deep remorse and apologize to the women. He repeatedly denied any intention to whitewash Japan's wartime responsibility.

But he didn't apologize for those comments about Japan's wartime brothels, and insisted that the country's wartime government did not systematically force girls and women into prostitution.

Historians say up to 200,000 women, mainly from the Korean Peninsula and China, were forced to provide sex for Japanese soldiers in military brothels. While some other World War II armies had military brothels, Japan is the only country accused of such widespread, organized sexual slavery.

"If only Japan is blamed because of the widely held view that the state authority of Japan was intentionally involved in the abduction and trafficking of women, I will have to inform you that this view is incorrect," he said.

Hashimoto urged the government to clarify or revise Japan's landmark apology in a 1993 statement by then-Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono to clearly state that Japan did not systematically force women into prostitution for its wartime military.

The Kono apology acknowledged the military's involvement, both direct and indirect, in the forced recruitment of the women.

Hashimoto said the apology does not say whether the operation was run under "state will" and that such murkiness has contributed to longstanding disputes between Japan and South Korea over the issue. He raised doubts of accounts by some of the women who have come forward as victims of Japan's sexual slavery as reliable evidence of coercion.

Before taking office in December, Abe advocated revising the Kono apology, but now says he stands by it.

Hashimoto said he was quoted out of context in saying he believed that the use the system was necessary. He said he was trying to say that armed forces around the world "seem to have needed women" in past wars and had violated women's human rights during wartime.

Singling out Japan was wrong, as this issue also existed in the armed forces of the United States, Britain, France, Germany and the former Soviet Union during World War II, he alleged, without elaborating.

"Based on the premise that Japan must remorsefully face its past offenses and must never justify the offenses, I intended to argue that other nations in the world must not attempt to conclude the matter by blaming only Japan and by associating Japan alone with the simple phrase of 'sex slaves' or 'sex slavery,'" Hashimoto said in a statement to journalists.

Hashimoto's suggestion to the U.S. troops brought sharp criticism from Washington. The State Department called Hashimoto's comments "outrageous and offensive."

Okinawa was invaded by U.S. forces in World War II and has had an American military presence since. The 1995 rape of a schoolgirl by two Marines and a sailor spread rage across the island, and more rapes and other crimes linked to U.S. servicemen over the years, along with military land use and aircraft noise, have caused longstanding anti-U.S. military sentiment there.

Hashimoto, 43, has become well known in recent years for his outspokenness. Last year, he formed the Japan Restoration Party with former Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara, a strident nationalist. It is now an opposition party in parliament.

NanoVelcro chip device captures and isolates potentially high-risk cancer cells

LOS ANGELES A research team jointly led by scientists from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the University of California, Los Angeles, have enhanced a device they developed to identify and "grab" circulating tumor cells, or CTCs, that break away from cancers and enter the blood, often leading to the spread of cancer to other parts of the body.

If more studies confirm the technology's effectiveness, the NanoVelcro Chip device could enable doctors to access and identify cancerous cells in the bloodstream, which would provide the diagnostic information needed to create individually tailored treatments for patients with prostate cancer.

The researchers believe this technology may function as a "liquid biopsy," revolutionizing conventional biopsy practices and significantly advancing the field of personalized medicine. Today's biopsies require the removal of tissue samples through a needle inserted into a solid tumor, a procedure that is invasive and sometimes painful. Biopsies are extremely difficult in metastatic prostate cancer because the disease often spreads to bone, where the availability of the tissue is low.

The biggest challenges in the treatment of cancer are that every person's tumor differs greatly and often mutates over time, especially in response to treatment. Researchers hope that by analyzing these CTCs, doctors will be able to understand the tumor evolution in each individual. By monitoring the genetic changes in CTCs and their invasiveness in a tissue culture dish, doctors may be able to quickly adjust their treatment plans in response.

"We are optimistic that the use of our NanoVelcro CTC technology will revolutionize prostate cancer treatment. We know that cancers evolve over time and that every patient's cancer is a unique problem the 'one-size-fits-all' approach is not going to allow us to cure prostate cancer or any other cancer," said Edwin M. Posadas, MD, medical director of the Urologic Oncology Program at Cedars-Sinai's Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute and senior author of the article in the March online issue of Advanced Materials.

"This evolution means that we need to be able to monitor these changes over time and to ensure a patient's treatment is individualized and optimized. The molecular characterizations of CTCs will provide real-time information allowing us to choose the right treatment for the right patient at the right time. This improvement will be a great step toward developing personalized medicine," he added.

The existence of CTCs and their role in cancer metastasis was first suspected more than 140 years ago, and the first test for the routine measurement of CTCs became available in 2004, but earlier methods have produced low capture efficiencies and limited capability of captured cells to be utilized for later molecular analysis.

"Our technology is the combination of three state-of-the-art technologies: the NanoVelcro CTC chip, laser capture microdissection and whole exome sequencing," said Yi-Tsung Lu, MD, a postdoctoral scientist at the Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, and one of the article's first authors. "This advancement will, in principle, allow us to track the genomic evolution of prostate cancer after we initiate a therapy and will allow us to better understand the mechanism of drug resistance that is common in prostate cancer patients. We hope the comprehensive understanding of cancer biology at the individual level will ultimately lead to better therapy choice for patients suffering from advanced cancer."

With the new system, a patient's blood is pumped through the NanoVelcro Chip the microvilli protruding from the cancer cells will stick to the nanofiber structures on the device's surface, much like Velcro. This phenomenon facilitates the capture of rare CTCs in the blood stream. Next, laser capture microdissection technology allows the scientists to selectively cut out and pick up the CTCs from the NanoVelcro Chip, virtually eliminating any trace of any contamination from white blood cells, which can complicate analysis. Finally, the isolated and purified CTCs are subjected to single cell "next-generation" sequencing, which reveals mutations in the genetic material of the cells and may help doctors personalize therapies to a patient's unique cancer.

"To date, CTC capture technologies have been able to do little more than count the number of CTCs, which is informative but not very useful from a treatment planning perspective. It is a scientific breakthrough to have the ability to isolate pure CTCs and maintain their integrity for sophisticated genomic and behavioral analyses," said Hsian-Rong Tseng, PhD, associate professor of molecular and medical pharmacology at UCLA and the inventor of the NanoVelcro Chip concept and device. His enthusiasm is echoed by Leland W. K. Chung, PhD, director of the Urologic Oncology Research Program at the Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute.

Rats have a double view of the world

May 27, 2013 ? Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in T?bingen, using miniaturised high-speed cameras and high-speed behavioural tracking, discovered that rats move their eyes in opposite directions in both the horizontal and the vertical plane when running around. Each eye moves in a different direction, depending on the change in the animal's head position. An analysis of both eyes' field of view found that the eye movements exclude the possibility that rats fuse the visual information into a single image like humans do. Instead, the eyes move in such a way that enables the space above them to be permanently in view -- presumably an adaptation to help them deal with the major threat from predatory birds that rodents face in their natural environment.

Like many mammals, rats have their eyes on the sides of their heads. This gives them a very wide visual field, useful for detection of predators. However, three-dimensional vision requires overlap of the visual fields of the two eyes. Thus, the visual system of these animals needs to meet two conflicting demands at the same time; on the one hand maximum surveillance and on the other hand detailed binocular vision.

The research team from the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics have now, for the first time, observed and characterised the eye movements of freely moving rats. They fitted minuscule cameras weighing only about one gram to the animals' heads, which could record the lightning-fast eye movements with great precision. The scientists also used another new method to measure the position and direction of the head, enabling them to reconstruct the rats' exact line of view at any given time.

The Max Planck scientists' findings came as a complete surprise. Although rats process visual information from their eyes through very similar brain pathways to other mammals, their eyes evidently move in a totally different way. "Humans move their eyes in a very stereotypical way for both counteracting head movements and searching around. Both our eyes move together and always follow the same object. In rats, on the other hand, the eyes generally move in opposite directions," explains Jason Kerr from the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics.

In a series of behavioural experiments, the neurobiologists also discovered that the eye movements largely depend on the position of the animal's head. "When the head points downward, the eyes move back, away from the tip of the nose. When the rat lifts its head, the eyes look forward: cross-eyed, so to speak. If the animal puts its head on one side, the eye on the lower side moves up and the other eye moves down." says Jason Kerr.

In humans, the direction in which the eyes look must be precisely aligned, otherwise an object cannot be fixated. A deviation measuring less than a single degree of the field of view is enough to cause double vision. In rats, the opposing eye movements between left and right eye mean that the line of vision varies by as much as 40 degrees in the horizontal plane and up to 60 degrees in the vertical plane. The consequence of these unusual eye movements is that irrespective of vigorous head movements in all planes, the eyes movements always move in such a way to ensure that the area above the animal is always in view simultaneously by both eyes -something that does not occur in any other region of the rat's visual field.

These unusual eye movements that rats possess appear to be the visual system's way of adapting to the animals' living conditions, given that they are preyed upon by numerous species of birds. Although the observed eye movements prevent the fusion of the two visual fields, the scientists postulate that permanent visibility in the direction of potential airborne attackers dramatically increases the animals' chances of survival.
