LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Eastman Kodak eased away from the Hollywood spotlight on Wednesday, asking to have its name removed from the theater that hosts the Oscars.
The once dominant photography company has asked a U.S. bankruptcy court to void an estimated $4 million-a-year contract and remove its name on the famous Kodak Theatre in central Hollywood as Kodak tries to preserve cash and restructure operations.
Kodak said in court documents it was filing a motion to reject the contract and that the theatre should take all steps necessary to remove Kodak's naming rights and the signage associated with it.
It was not immediately clear if Kodak's name will appear on the building during this month's upcoming Academy Awards on February 26, but a source familiar with the matter said several companies have approached building owner CIM Group about naming rights.
About 10 years ago, Kodak agreed to pay $74 million to CIM to see its name for some 20 years on the facade of the 3,400-plus seat theater.
A spokesperson for CIM was not immediately available to comment.
"Kodak is proud of its important role in the entertainment industry and our long-standing relationship with film makers," the company said. "Our motion today reflects our commitment to ensure that we are maximizing value for our entertainment customers, creditors and other stakeholders."
Branding experts say the value of any naming rights should rise.
"I think there's so much media attention on Kodak and the circumstances of its bankruptcy that from a visibility point of view, the new company that puts its name there will get a lot of attention. And that has a lot of value," said Adam Hanft, CEO of Hanft Projects.
Hanft also believes the next naming rights deal for the property will likely be shorter.
"Business changes so fast now. It's a high risk proposition for a vendor and a company to enter into such a long-term branding deal in this marketplace," he said. "I think the building owner will get more money over a shorter period of time."
He noted that telecommunication companies have deep enough pockets for these kind of deals, while wealthy social media companies may view putting their name on a brick and mortar structure as too "old school."
Kodak's bankruptcy on January 19 has been rippling through Hollywood in several ways. Yet even though its role in entertainment started to fade as digital technology began diluting its century-long hold on film distribution, Kodak still has a significant impact on Hollywood.
Among Kodak's top unsecured creditors are major studios, owed millions of dollars in film rebates, who fear they will not be repaid.
Major entertainment companies listed among Kodak's top 50 unsecured creditors include Sony Corp, owed $16.7 million; Time Warner Inc's Warner Brothers, due $14.2 million; Comcast Corp's NBC Universal, short $9.3 million; Viacom Inc's Paramount Studios, owed $6.8 million; and Walt Disney Studios, $4.2 million. [ID:nL1E8CJ3MF]
A lawyer representing the Kodak creditors was not immediately available for comment.
Sources have said most of those debts are related to film rebates owed to the studios who buy film from Kodak on a picture-by-picture basis. The price of film varies and often drops as a studio uses more, which is why they are often owed rebates.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also has a 20 year deal with CIM Group to host the Oscars at the theatre, but has currently hit the 10-year point in the contract, which includes an option that allows it to explore new venues for Hollywood's biggest awards gala.
The film academy has said it has not begun venue negotiations for the Oscar telecast beyond 2013.
"The Kodak is where the awards have been for the last 10 years. We don't have any big reasons to want to leave," Tom Sherak, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences told Reuters. "But we'll make that decision as we negotiate."
The case is in re: Eastman Kodak Co et al, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York. No. 12-10202.

Creating the perfect partial salt replacementPublic release date: 1-Feb-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]
Contact: Mirko Betti mirko.betti@ualberta.ca 780-868-6002 University of Alberta
In the quest to lower sodium consumption in the North American diet, a team of University of Alberta researchers recently received $340,000 to conduct sensory and taste trials of the salt flavour enhancement product it created with a new, cleaner and more efficient technology.
The team took proteins from low value parts of poultry, fish and vegetables and created molecules that have kokumi characteristics. Kokumi was recently identified by the Japanese as the sixth basic taste, an addition to salty, sweet, sour, bitter and umami (or savoury). Translated often as "heartiness" or "mouthfulness," kokumi describes compounds in foods that don't have their own flavour. Rather, they enhance the flavour with which they're combined.
"Hopefully, we'll be able to significantly reduce the sodium in several food products by replacing it with the kokumi we developed. Because the kokumi amplifies the taste of the salt, it allows foods to have much less salt and be better for you, without sacrificing the flavour. Done right, most consumers wouldn't know the difference," says Mirko Betti, who leads the team that also includes Michael Ganzle, Andreas Schieber and Maurice Ndagijimana.
While the flavour enhancer is one product among others that allows food manufacturers to replace salt without sacrificing flavour, kokumi is considered the best because it provides the best punch or first impact of a food, the best mildness and the best long-lasting taste development.
Kokumi is already sold on the market to food manufacturers as a salt enhancer by at least one major international food and chemical company who creates it from soy beans. However, the traditional way in which kokumi is manufactured also leads to the creation of many unhealthy by-products.
What makes Betti's kokumi unique is the way in which he manufactured it.
The ALES team broke the proteins from the various sources into their component fragments as is usually done. It then selected specific fragments and mixed them with sugars but instead of using the typical heat transfer process to create the kokumi molecules, it used a fermentation process, thereby drastically reducing the unwanted by-products and making the process much more cost-effective.
Plans are now underway to use the funding to conduct sensory trials to fine tune the process and technology.
The potential for the kokumi market is staggering as consumption of the food enhancer isn't linked to the ill effects, including heart disease, associated with overconsumption of sodium, which is common in the North American diet.
According to Health Canada, Canadians consume twice the amount of sodium they need every day. While it's an essential part of a healthy diet, too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure, a major risk factor for stroke, heart disease and kidney disease. Overconsumption of sodium has also been linked to increased risks of osteoporosis, stomach cancer and the severity of asthma.
###
The funding, which was provided by the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency and Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions, gives the team a two-year window in which to conduct the trials and refine its technology to eventually patent and sell it.

Parties can be a great source of fun, especially when planning a party in Africa. African parties are among the best known parties in the world. Here I will mention some of the ideas about the African party:
First important thing to keep in mind is decoration. You should choose right things for your decoration, for the appropriate look for your party. You can make your party look amazing by covering the tables by cloth which describes the region.
The best looking prints for these kinds of events are leopard, zebra and elephant prints. For the fabric material, mud cloth or Malian cloth is definitely an appropriate choice because of its superior quality, variety and elaborate designs. On the other hand, you can also use the Kente cloth which is intricately woven in the Ashanti region of South Africa. The African decorations I?ve mentioned above might be a little expensive but they will truly make your party African and a memorable day in your life.
Another thing to keep in mind is food. In South Africa most of the people eat with their hands. If you want a true African party you should eat with your hands. If you eat with your hands and you will truly be experiencing Africa. Though this is, of course, not always you will be eating with your hands. You can keep the best known dishes in Africa in your party like the dishes from Ghana. You can keep the coconut drink after meal which will make your party a true African party.
The last important thing to look for is of course music because without it your party is going to be boring and lifeless. Now, you can use the exotic drum beats and tunes of the famous South African melody to bring meaning and vivacity in your merrymaking. You can also make a dress code for your party to make you truly experience Africa. Well, with all these elements that I?ve mentioned, I?m pretty sure you?re starting to envision your own African celebration.
Automotive parts are the different components (or spare parts) of an automobile. Every automobile owner will have to shop for automotive parts sooner or later. Contrary to popular belief, automotive parts are not manufactured only by the original manufacturing company (of your automobile) but also by various independent (engineering) companies that specialize in manufacturing and installing automotive parts of a diverse range of automobiles of different makes and models. Automotive parts (manufactured by the original manufacturing company of your automobile) are expensive in most cases. When you factor in the repair or installation charges you will have to pay at the workshop and cost of alternative transport, you would realize that it will make more financial sense to buy your automobile and purchase a new one.
Most car enthusiasts can and do have a certain degree of technical know-how and generic tools that are useful for basic repair work.
If you have undertaken thorough research and explored all the options before purchasing the automotive parts, you would probably have purchased them at a reasonable price. A large number of car enthusiasts save hundreds of dollars just because they have technical know-how and generic tools that allow them to do basic repair work and installation of their vehicles at home. Availability of automotive parts was a huge constraint some time back. Automobile owners could buy second hand parts from their repair workshop or order them from the original manufacturing company of their automobile.
Experts recommend investing in original equipment manufacturer automotive parts despite the fact that they are more expensive because they are superior in quality, more reliable and are made for the specific make and model of your automobile.
On the other hand, aftermarket parts are manufactured for your car by companies other than the original manufacturer and are designed (generically) for several (makes and models of) cars. The performance of aftermarket parts is unreliable at best. Moreover, because they are manufactured by relatively smaller (and unknown companies) there are no guarantees for aftermarket parts available in the market. Thus, do not be lured by the substantially lower price of aftermarket parts because chances are that they would make you spend more in the long run than original equipment manufacturer parts! It should also be kept in mind that original equipment manufacturer parts are not necessarily manufactured by your automobile?s manufacturing company but one or more other companies that have been authorized to manufacture these parts by your automobile?s manufacturing company.

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? Dozens of homeless people have died in an Eastern Europe cold snap, and some analysts blame a Soviet-era legacy of viewing the homeless as those who need to be punished instead of helped.
Temperatures have plunged to minus 27 C (minus 17 F) in some areas. At least 58 people have died overall in the past week, while hundreds have sought medical help for hypothermia and frostbite. Snow and ice have disrupted traffic and power in some parts.
Ukraine has been among the hardest hit countries. As many as 30 people have died on its snow-covered streets, in hospitals and in their own homes in the past four days. Authorities said most of the victims were homeless, and that some victims had been drinking and unaware of the danger.
In one village in the Cherkasy region in central Ukraine, a 44-year-old alcoholic fell asleep on the porch of her house and froze to death, said Olena Didyuk, spokeswoman for the Emergency Situations Ministry.
Ukrainian authorities have set up hundreds of 'heating centers' across the country ? large green or beige tents ? in which the homeless can get warm and are offered sandwiches, boiled potatoes, pork fat (a traditional Ukrainian dish), hot tea and coffee.
Still, more than 540 people have been hospitalized with hypothermia and frostbite, Ukrainian health officials said. Ukraine's 1+1 channel broadcast footage of a man being treated for frostbite in his toes, which had turned completely black.
"I drank and fell asleep on the bench. I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't feel my feet," the unidentified man said from a hospital bed.
Hospitals were instructed to refrain from discharging homeless patients even if treatment was finished to save them from the cold, said Svitlana Tikhonenko, spokeswoman for the Health Ministry.
Those measures helped save some lives, she said. Two years ago, 47 people perished over a similar time period during a cold wave.
"Unfortunately, people continue to die, but we are taking all the measures to prevent them," Tikhonenko said.
Some experts suggested that the high death toll from the cold is linked to authorities' unwillingness and incompetence in dealing with the homeless.
Pavlo Rozenko, an expert on social policy with the Kiev-based Razumkov Center, said that Ukrainian authorities suffer from the Soviet legacy of viewing the homeless as alcoholics, drug addicts and do-nothings who need to be punished and locked away from society instead of helped.
"The country doesn't know yet how to take care of its homeless," Rozenko said.
Kiev municipal head Oleksandr Popov ordered city schools and colleges closed starting Wednesday as temperatures are expected to drop to minus 28 C (minus 18 F). "They will be on a break at least until Monday," Popov said on his website.
In Poland, five people died of hypothermia in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll from the cold to 15 in the last four days, the national police said.
Temperatures sank Tuesday to minus 27 C (minus 17 F) in the southeastern Polish city of Ustrzyki Gorne ? and forecasts predicted minus 29 C (minus 20 F) in the region overnight.
In Romania, two people died in the past 24 hours due to the frigid weather, the health ministry said Tuesday, bringing the total to eight since the cold spell began last week. Temperatures plunged to minus 20 C (minus 4 F) overnight in Bucharest.
In Russia, one person died of the cold in Moscow, where temperatures fell to minus 21 C (minus 6 F), the city's health department said. The Russian Emergencies Ministry is not reporting deaths across the country yet.
