St. Patrick's Day parade in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Saint Patrick's Day is still a week away, but the streets of Providence came alive with Irish pride Saturday morning.

The annual Saint Patrick's Day parade has been held since the 1920s and always draws a crowd.

Festivities started with three thousand runnings participating in a 5-K road race.

Even those who didn't necessarily have Irish blood showed up, but most of those who did said it's a tradition they'd been carrying on for years.

"This is about my 15th or 20th year - I've kind of lost track," said Dana Lemoine.? "Sort of a tradition, come here to Patrick's to have a few Guinness, say hi to our friends in the 5K and have a few drinks."

Many came in authentic Irish garb, like Luke Morrison, who wore an outfit that's been passed down through his family for three generations.

The parade has been running for about 90 years, but got a shot in the arm in 1994.
