A GOLF course is not generally considered a particularly dangerous place.

But female golfer Daniela Homqvist may disagree with that theory after being bitten by a deadly black widow spider as she played.

Swede Homqvist was on the fourth hole of the ISPS Handa Australian Open in Yarralumla, Australia, when she felt a sudden sharp stabbing pain in her ankle.

She looked down and noticed a large black creature with a red spot which she quickly spotted away.

When the pain hit, worried local caddies said it was the bite of the world's deadliest spider.

She told Svensk Golf: "When I told the local caddies in my group what had happened, they got very upset and said it was a Black Widow, and immediately started looking for their phones to call the medics."

But as her leg started to swell, she took matters into her own hands.

Using a golf tee, she cut open her own leg to squeeze out the venom.

She said: "A clear fluid came out.

"It wasn't the prettiest thing I've ever done, but I had to get as much of it out of me as possible."

Unbelievably, once she had got the venom out, she decided to carry on playing.

Sadly, her shot of 74 left her out of the tournament - but at least she has a good excuse!
